A retrograde step - in modern times - Help !

Stuck in the rural areas of South Africa, I am in need of the wise council of those who frequent these pages.

I am building my own bass boat, 17ft hull, and designed and built the boat with seperate cockpits for driver and passenger. These may be generously described as extremely snug. So snug in fact, that a Hotfoot takes care of throttle, a column mounted trim switch and dash mounted ignition key & kill switch does the rest.

Missing from the pretty picture and something the designer (me) forgot about, is the trifling matter of gear selection for the outboard, which will be a new Mercury 90 to 125. I have read all the posts about OMC electroshifts etc.

Now the questions :

1. Is it possible to fit a similar device to a modern outboard - perhaps a device that shifts a shortened cable from the rear hatch ?

2. Where or whom do I purchase the needed solenoid etc from ?

3. Does anyone have any suggestions ? ( all the usual wisecracks have already been made by my so-called fishing buddies - from installing a control box on the outside of the hull, to sinking the boat )

Stirrer

Why does the system have to be electro-engaged? Why not put another foot pedal for gear slection? Or a level under your crotch (if you have room) that will allow you to select forward/reverse. I think the electro design will give you more problems than a seperate cable. I am not familar with your boat design so what I propose might be impossible.

Thanks for the suggestion - electro was probably just too ambitious - or a quest for one-upmanship ! I think a simple lever would suffice - I have two left feet ! Now, trying to source something suitable in South Africa mmmmmm. South African marine retailers are allergic to on-line purchases. Thank you once again
