A snag when installing fuel pump on '58 sportwin

I have found the by-pass cover plate and the fuel pump to convert it. after I installed the cover, I was getting ready to install the fuel pump but noticed that the "in" and "out" came out on the right hand side. The barbed ends are so close to the lever that moves in and out when you shift it into gear that there is no way to get hose connected to it. On the face of the pump it has an arrow that is pointing up and the word "up" on it. My question is can this pump be mounted upside down or does it have to be mounted "up"?? Help, Please?

Can you post a pic of the situation you're dealing with?

I know all of the cover plates are slightly different, you may need to mount the pump upside down to make it fit, or find a replacement cover plate. See the Faqs for a thread on this.

I guess that's my question...can I mount the pump upside down even though it has the word "up" with an arrow pointing up on the face. Thanks.

The pump should be mounted with UP facing up. What is the Brand and model number of the pump? That said, you can always try turning it upside down and see if it works.

Mounting the pump upside down is not a good idea because it can run with a large trapped air bubble inside, which affects the pumping efficiency. When right side up, the air is purged by the location of the outlet check valve.

Do you have enough room to add a second gasket between the pump and bypass cover?

Yes, I've got enough room, but I still have the situation that the in port and out port are within a 1/4 of an inch from the lever that moves back and forth when you shift it in foward and reverse. I am trying to find 90 degree elbows but can't find them either.
