A unique alignment situation...

So, there's a long story here but I'll try to keep it to the important details...

I am reinstalling my 470. Since removal, I have new rear motor mounts and mounting hardware, a different transom assembly (bellhousing/gimbal ring/gimbal housing) and gimbal bearing.

The problem is this: the rear of the motor is a tiny bit too low. Like a TINY bit... Loosening the rear mounting bolts (and thus the pressure on the springs) it seems pretty perfect. I haven't fine-tuned it in this position, but it is far closer than it is with the rear mounts properly torqued. My dilemma is what to use for a shim...? I think a standard washer might be too thick. And rubber won't be durable enough for under the spring. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

I do my best to stay away from questions dealing with 470 but I wade out with an opinion on this one. Finding a shim that will raise the rear enough for a perfect alignment is good but only for now. If the rear needs to be raised again your back into the same issue. I would suggest looking for a way to lower the front even if it took some rebuilding.

The mounts are new. The stacks are correct.

I think that the problem is related to the fact that the new transom assembly is from a V8. I had to grind out 1/16" of the hole where the neck of the gimbal housing passes through the transom plate. The ID of the neck is the same but the OD was 1/8" larger (1/16" thicker). We're really only talking about 1/16"-1/8" too low. The alignment tool goes in with everything torqued properly but there's considerable friction. When the rear mounts are loosened and the rear rises ~1/16"-1/8", it's almost perfect (but I didn't fine-tune the front in this state).

Thanks!

I replaced a coupler & ran into the same problem. Lowered the front just a tad & everything was perfect. Good luck. Jim.
