Mercury, Mariner, Mercury/Mariner, Yamaha/Mariner etc!

Well what newbie wouldn't be confused with that many titles. Can any of you old hands explain the difference? I am trying to get spares for my engine.

Hi Bill,

As JB said, give us the horsepower and serial number of your engine and we'll do our best.

Bit of a history of the Merc/Mariner/Yamahoha saga.

Mercury was started when Carl Kiekhaefer bought a small outboard company in 1939.
Mariner started to 'produce' engines in 1974 and used Yamahas for engines up to 60hp and Mercs for engines 70hp+. Mercury Marine bought Mariner and from about 1986 started to replace the Yammy-Mariners with Mercs. The transition was completed around 1990.

Now the only differences between Mercs and Mariners are the colour of the engine cowl and the decals, even the prices are the same, or should be.

Cheers and I hope that helps you.
