I have it in forward gear with prop locked, pushing the shifter all the way when measuring.

I'm not getting the required 6" space between the center of the brass ball and the opening. I'm seeing about 3/16 more but not sure if this is still within spec, there's nothing here that can be really adjusted unless I force the brass ball to move which is locked.

If this is not close enough what can be causing it? Could the cable have stretched over the years? I'm not the original owner so I'm assuming this cable is 20 years old.

Not sure but it also might be the cause of my upper cable not have enough space to back off the plastic barrel 4 turns during adjustment. I remember having that issue last year.

Thanks guys

if you old guide tube is adjustable use it, if not drill the punch mark out and adjust normally

Yeap that was easier than I expected, lower cable is now up to spec.

Now, the upper cable I'm seeing 3 1/4 of travel so I'm 1/8 out of spec. I did a bunch of search and looking through docs but it doesn't mention how to deal with too much travel.

I wouldn't bother about 1/8". The problems occur when the travel is too little (less than 3")...
