Okay guys, I know y'all heard from me a couple of weeks ago and you're probably wondering what's the holdup. But when I'm gonna lay down hard earned cash for something I don't know crap about, I do alot of research. Then I come back and ask the questions one more time. Here's my opinion:
I want a 40hp (4stroke or 2) for my 15ft aluminum Duracraft,period.
I love the Evinrude (Suzuki) specs and EFI, but the 238 pounds is about 40 pounds over my old motor(I think).
Merc, Yamaha, Honda, all fall about the same. Given a choice I would probably go with Merc because I have a very reputable dealer about 25 miles away.
Nissan has a good price but I don't know if the 40 2 stroke will please me in the long run. Come on guys, push me over the edge here. I need some real shoving. I will be glad to give you more info about my current setup if you need it. I wish I knew how to look up my old Mercury 40 hp 2 stroke and see exactly what it weighed. It is about a 93 model with 4 cylinders and two carbs, oil injected and ain't never idled for crap.
Thanks for any shoving.
Jabo

If it only weight that you are concerned about at this point, you should stick to a 2 stroke engine, you will come up better than a hundred pounds lighter and yes 238 pounds on a 15 footer might make you loose a lot of the plusses that a four stroke engine might have. You will increase your water displacement by the same amount of weight that the engine is heavier, meaning that your boat will lay a bit deeper in the water and maybe even at an uncomfortable angle. This will slow it down. Also even when you just lay in the water your transom will be that much deeper down and you might start getting water in the boat from waves that come in from the rear.
However if that 4 stroke tickles your fancy, you should buy it anyway.
Happy boating, Rolmops

Re: About Ready to Buy, But Need Help

I called my locale dealer to ask about the Evinrude and it's weight for my boat. He didn't even want to talk about the Evinrude. He said he sells them but they have problems and he did'nt recommend me buying one. All he wanted to sell me was a Mercury. He handles several brands but Merc was his big thing. Do some of you dealers out there have a clue as to why this dealer is pushing Mercury so hard?
Jabo

Jabo, I just bought a Merc 60 EFI 4-stroke so I know where you are comming from.I have a very good Merc dealer 5 min from my house and that combined with a 5 year warranty from Merc helped me with my choice.I really looked into suzuki/evinrude, same thing, but chose not to buy because of factory support issues. What is your boat rated for max Hp, I don't know what your limits are but weight seemes to be an issue. My boat is a 16ft Alum. and can take up to 75Hp but I think that have been to heavy, the 60 hp fits just nice.Merc does not make a 40 Efi only Suzuki does, there are some real negative posts about Suzuki and there are also so very good ones but that can happen with any motor. If you dont hear from J.B.Cornwell in your post see if you can put a note att JB on another post as he loves his Suzuki and he is very good with helping people. Good Luck. Paul

PaulP,
According to the 2002 catalog Mercury do make a 3 cylinder 30 and 40 hp EFI motor, dry weight 216 ibs. The 40 hp Bigfoot EFI (240 ibs)is a 4 cylinder and is the same motor as the 50 and 60 hp without power trim/tilt as standard.
I agree, with all the bad press on Suzuki sevice and the yet to prove new Evinrude organization, I'd stick to Mercury with the 5 year warrenty. I think you have to move fast as the extra 2 year warrenty program ends soon.
In Canada Mercury only gives the standard 3 year warrenty plus if you buy before April 14, they give $350 Mercury dollors to purchase merchandise.
Good luck.

Hey all,

I have a Mercury 2002 motor catalog here are the numbers, Jabo they aren't as heavy as you might think.

40 HP Two Stroke 3Cyl = 199 lbs

40 HP Four Stroke 3 Cyl = 204 lbs

40 HP Four Stroke Bigfoot 4 cyl = 252 lbs

The standard 40 four stroke looks like the winner in the weight war. You wouldn't want the bigfoot anyway it is designed for much bigger boats or pontoons.

If you need any more info from the catalog let me know. It has everything you would ever want to know.

Hope this helps ;)

Sorry Lost Canadian I must have fast scrolled right past your post.

You already had the numbers posted didn't mean to step on your toes with my Bigfoot.

Sorry again it's the PC's fault I pushed that down arrow and it went right past your post. :( Unless it somehow didn't show up yet? I don't know how I missed it

No problem Capt_U! The Canadian catalog looks like it has slightly different weights for the motors, must be to justify the lower price with the Canadian Dollar-ette :D

Just for your information.
A 50 hp EFI Bigfoot is well over US$1000.00 less in Canada (contact mrmerc)than the price on ITG Marine-Outboard.com I beleive with free trade there is no duty or Canadian tax, just shipping.
I just ordered one on the weekend :D

Re: About Ready to Buy, But Need Help

I appreciate the help from you gentlemen. I ordered my 40 hp and it does come with EFI. I can't find that anywhere on Mercury's website, but my dealer assures me that it has EFI and it's dry weight is 216. I will probably wind up being about 30lbs heavier than my old 2 stroke 40. I should get it about Monday of next week. My dealer says all the old controls will work on this new motor. I sure hope he's right. Thanks again,
Jabo
