Got a 25hp Evinrude, Mod #25302. Been working on the engine on & off and right now the motor runs like a scalded dog. Idles great, no sneezin or missing, easy to start, and when you give it the gas it jumps my 16' flat bottom plum out the water.

Problem I got is when I get the boat up on a plane it wants to jump out of gear. I can hold the shift lever forward and force it to stay in gear but need to apply constant pressure. I have adjusted the shift linkage, its a manual shifter, as per the manual so I dont think that has anything to do with the problem.

From what I have read here it looks like I have a problem with the forward gear and clutch dog. Probably one or both are worn and need replacing.

My ? is this. Is this job, rebuilding the L/U, something that requires a mess a special tools and expertise? In reading the manual, Clymer, it seems pretty straight forward but it is making mention of several special tools.

My guess is that most of these tools could be bypassed with a little shade tree mechanic inginuity. Am I wrong?

This is not a difficult job if you have a manual. Only problem may be getting the seals out if they need replacing. This is where the special tools come in. I feel you are right about the forward gear & dog.

One last thing to try before you tear into it is disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever on the engine and see it still jumps out of gear. if it does, it's definitely time for a rebuild. If it doesn't, it's either adjustment or shift cable.

c/6
Hooty
