I've never heard of that before... nor have I seen gas with methanol as the additive before. Seems plausible enough though.

Re: About Stabil

Up here in the northeast they use it they also had a chemist take methenol and put a carb. gasket in it and within 3 hours the casket was breaking down so the gas mix is wat dilutes it enough to not harm gaskets but if you let the gas sit it separates and the gas dissapates and leaves the methenol witch then plays havoc with carbs

Re: About Stabil

I was wondering who the "they" was that had a Chemist soak a gasket in Methenol.Doesn't sound like a proper scientific procedure to me.
While separation of Methenol and gasoline seems possible I think the evaporation rates are close and the percentage left if it didn't evaporate would hardly cover the bottom of the float bowl.
I wouldn't be surprised if you soaked a gasket in gasoline it might get pretty soggy even without methenol. or in water for that matter.
Yes methenol might attack some plastics and shellac on cork floats but at the percentage used it seems it would take a long time to be evident.
Maybe we should put some gas in a bowl and let it evaporate and see what is left.Where was the Stabil article and who was "they"?

I've seen ethanol separate from gas, but not when fuel stabiliser was added. However, I tried the experiment with a different brand of fuel stabiliser.

I don't use the stuff but there was some chatter about it couple of wks ago and I went to their site. Seems there is a blue (as I recall) insert in the upper rt hand corner of the home page that advertises the fact that they have a new one out for E10.

I have sitting in the shop right now 2 shot glasses half full with gas..one straight, one Stabil. Lightly covered with a sheet of foil, so not air tight.
Did this 4-5 months ago, both about 90% gone. So far both smell about the same, and still liquid.
I'll know more in a month, see whats left...

Re: About Stabil

So what are we worried about here -- "methanol" or "ethanol"?? We've used Stabil in ethanol blended fuel since it was introduced in 1997 and have no issues with it. I also use SeaFoam. Either one works well.
