BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year

Don't be too concerned with actual numbers when you check compression. That particular motor may or may not have 100+ lbs. We look for variations of more than 15 lbs as a sign of problems. That particular motor may have one bank (side) slightly higher than the other. Don't worry about that. Compare each cylinder on a bank to each other and then look bank to bank. The compression may vary slightly from top to middle to bottom on that motor. Again, don't worry about it, some heads had progressive chambers.

Overall, a great motor. One of OMC's better designs, if not the best. Keep Champion plugs in it and feed it fresh 87 octane with good oil and it should last a very long time.

My new-to-me carb'd 175 is basically the same motor, and it IS a nice unit. I like mine a lot. Smooth and powerful. Just for comparison purposes (and as already mentioned) the compression numbers may vary between port and starboard side cylinder banks. I show 100-110 on port side and 109-114 on the starboard, but the motor runs like a champ.

Asking which oil to use is like asking which make of motor is best - you'll get as many different opinions as you get answers. Any major brand should do fine, but based on other posts here I'm using Pennzoil XLF semi-synthetic. It's cheaper than most and my motor seems to like it okay. It's available at Wal Mart, too.

I also use Seafoam at approximately a pint for every 20 gallons of 87 octane gas to keep the carbs and rings clean, and Sta-Bil per directions to keep the fuel in good shape. It all adds to the price of a gallon of gas, but I think that keeping the fuel, carbs and combustion chambers clean pays dividends in the long run. Again, that's just MY opinion/method.

Get manuals- service manual, parts catalog and owner's manual are all good/essential to have. Find out when the water pump was serviced last- if it was more than a couple of years ago, or the owner doesn't know, put that at the top of your "to-do" list.

Best of luck!

any TC-W3 outboard motor oil is approiate. the synthetics are more expensive, and produce less smoke. but as far as function Walmarts Super Tech, is as good as any. been using it for years.
