1975 OMC stringer electric shift. 165 HP straight six.

My intermediate housing is damaged where the tilt wormgrear goes.

I found a housing. so I am ready to dig into replacing it.

Any good advice/ some searches seem to point out that the Ball gear shafts may be a paint to remove from the flywheel making separation a pain. any hints? .

I am wondering If I have to remove the motor or should I leave it in. and pull everything out the transom?

How about the steering. Mine has a Cable (looks like two cables together) for the steering. whats the trick to getting that out.

Lastly, should I remove the upper and lower first? and when I do how does the electric shift come undone.

Thanks in advance. did not want to get into it to far without some pointers.

Just a little bump...

Got all my "new" (read used) parts on the bench it all looks the same. so I am sure I got the right stuff.

I also am replacing the lower. I didn't have any questions on that until I got the " new" one. the wires going to the electric shift are THRASHED. can those be replaced by Themselves? I mean if they are connected to the shift solenoid inside the lower and I might as well leave them be, cut them off as close as I can ans Solder/shrink tube some new ones on..

remove the outdrive
remove plastic dust shield off rear trucourse drum
steer until you see the head of a screw come around
remove screw from drum
slide trucourse shaft out the rear -keep track of wave washer and nylon washer and spacer that will fall out when you slide the shaft out the back
unbolt steer cable bracket and remove steer cable

Thanks sounds straight forward... But what is a Trucourse Drum? is that the unit that is connected to the intermediate housing. and the "dust cover" the threaded "cap" that screws on over it.

Sorry new at this.. I can take a picture if that helps out.

Good luck!

Thanks, Got the upper and lower off. now comes the hard part...

I still did not get an answer. do I pull the motor out, or can I pull the intermediate out through the hole in the Transom? It looks like it will fit.

Of course whomever had the transom seal (the big round one around the intermediate) off last sis a HECK of a job with the silicone sealing the thing to the Transom. it will take me a day to scrape it all off. LOL

Most people just pull the engine and intermediate, then seperate.

ok got it down to the intermediate housing. I cant get to two bolts... ARRRGH It looks like have plenty of room to get it out the back. if I could get those bolts.. oh well I'm off to set up my engine hoist... bummer.

Oh and I went to take the tilt motor off. Did I do it wrong? two bolts on the back (10 mm) I pulled those the motor came off all right... in pieces..
WIsh me luck putting it back together..

It looked like the intermediate would have come through the transom, but I could not get to two bolts holding the intermediate on. so I broke out the hoist..
