I had a prior post as to a 1994 200 Evinrude that is difficult to start in the water. At home on a hose I can fire it right up.

I properly prime the engine but have no luck there. It will generally spin for a while, give one hit and wheeze. Have adjusted timing and carbs as per the Climer, tried new plugs and just have no luck.

When I do finally get it running in the water it will fire right up for the entire weekend.

On another note, I had a problem with flooding at start-up, but that went away with the carb adjustment.

Finally, I have noticed that I have a tremendous amount of oil in my exhaust and the plugs are always wet. I have checked the line and can find no leaks where air could be drawn -- Can the VRO pump be adjusted? Do these inject too much oil if there is something wrong with the pump? Can the pump be rebuilt or do I need to replace? Is there any strange way this could be causing my starting problems when I get to water?

Thanks for any additional help ya'll can offer.

Do not give up hope! There are people here that can help you and it only takes a kind word to somehow make you feel better! Keep posting and I am sure someone will help you out. If it makes you feel better read the post I have on the Evinrude V6 150! That should make you feel a little better! How about them keys my mechanic lost! Good luck and hang in there! Things will look up! :D

check your fuelpump the diafram can git a hole init. that will draw gass in the block . does your bulb pump up firm. pump and hold firm if it dont hold it could be going in the block .my 55 onley ran on 1 cylinder when idling changed the fuelpump ran justfine.

Describe, in detail, your exact starting proccdure. Have the carbs been cleaned? What spark plugs? Should be Champion QL77JC4. How old is the fuel?

I think I remember something of your posts before and they centered around the starting rpm. You may want to think about having a shop try another flywheel if indeed your starter turns it over at least 350 rpm in the water.

Good luck!

You said you changed the timimg. what is the timing at cranking rpms cold engine? Did you check for loose flywheel magnets, you dont have to remove the flywheel to do this.

Jim, don't give up. I have a 1994 Evinrude 225 and it runs great. I did have an issue with the VRO. When sitting for a while...2-stroke oil would drain from the VRO pump down the gas line all the way to the inline gas filter under cowling (maybe even further if sitting a long time). Then when I would go to the lake I would pump the bulb and fill my carbs with oil. It would smoke like crazy until the initial burst of oil was burned off. Turns out the check valve in the VRO pump was not working properly and oil would leak into the gas line when sitting. I disconnected the VRO and have not had any problems. I use Champion QL78YC spark plugs.

Jin,

Have you tried separate fuel. I just had my 87 140 rebuilt. As the hours clocked on the new motor it was difficult to start. I was using 25:1 oil. I recently had an incident where it refused to start, really foulded plugs. If engine was warm it was OK.

As soon as I reverted to 50:1 oil problems disapeared. It maybe worth just trying a separate fuel source incase the pump is over oiling.

NG

i had a similar starting problem ,wouldn't go then once going was fine from then on ,turned out the choke solenoid was bad so i was trying to start without choke, once fixed it made a huge difference.this may or may not help?

You said you set the timing up. What method did you use. Cranking rpm. or low and top end running rpm.
If running, was it in the water or on dry land?
If on dry land you had no exhaust / back compression from the water colum. This makes a big difference on idle rpm. stabilty thus effecting timing and true, in water ( back pressure ) idle rpm.
Maybe someone can chime in pro or con on this line of thought?

Hi FishinJim,

First, to answer your question, no the VRO pump cannot be adjusted. The only time I have seen them inject too much oil is when there is air being drawn into the fuel side of the pump because of a loose hose. If it draws any air on the fuel supply side of the pump it won't draw as much fuel and replaces it with extra oil. Most of the time this will also cause an excessive amount of oil smoke while running, especially at idle speed.

The problem Sand Bass mentioned I have experienced quite a bit on 40 and 50hp engines in that vintage. With the 40/50's they were very hard to start even on the hose and very difficult to keep running until the excess oil burned off.

I know it sounds simple but are you pumping the fuel primer bulb before you attempt to start the engine? I'm sure you are but you wouldn't believe how many of my customers don't.

I don't work on as many larger engines as smaller ones so I can't remember if the '94 200 has what OMC called Quick Start. This is a feature that advanced the timing on the engine until it reached approx. 100 degrees. If that wasn't functioning it could be difficult to start with the added backpressure of the water. If the motor has this feature one of the temp sensors in the heads will have two wires coming out of it.

Guess that's all I can think of at this point.

Let us know what you find....

Engine has Quick Start. If you set full advance timing on a cold engine at cranking rpms. The timing is off by at least 6 degrees. I would buy mnual, do a link sync by the numbers. Check the primer system, should spray fuel in intake behind the carbuators, when you push in switch and squeeze primer bulb. All 6 cylinders should have 7/16 spark at cranking rpms, if no spark on all cylinders, start by checking the timer. Timer has 12 sensors, 1 set for Quick Start, 1 set for normal running, and they are set about 6 degrees apart.
