--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
after years of needling, I gave in to my wife
and bought her a new pool. it's a circular 24'
above ground model. after getting quoted $550
to install and looking at the SIMPLE instructions,
I decided to just pay my niehbor farmer $50
to bring his backhow over to dig/level the area.
as things are never as easy as I think, was hoping
y'all had some experience, tips, tricks etc.
was kinda tough getting her to accept me doing
it myself, so you know what happens if I run
into a problem
thanks in advance,
M.Y.

Re: above ground pools

Can we come over and flush our outboards in it? :D Down here the installers usually lay down a sand bed once the ground is leveled out.

Howdy MY,
I was always told to be careful with the amount of sand that you use. In heavy rains, it can wash out from under the pool causing all sorts of problems. Careful with all them chemicals too.

If your really nice to us, we will stock your new pool, free of charge. :D

MY,
I dug the top dirt away for my uncle. He had me dig it like a bowl, about a foot deep in the center, and about 4'' at the outer edge. Then we installed a very thick plastic, and recovered with sand. The sand at the edge was at grade level, he kept it about 4'' below in the center, not sure what the advantage is to that? Get ready, that was the nice part. You will want about 6 people around when it's time for the pool!
Good luck & happy swimming!

Re: above ground pools

MY, ya don't know what you are gettin' into! Yikes! Want to buy my in-ground? Anyway, it is purchased, so, be careful, as has been said with the sand. Wet it and make sure you have it packed down well. Yes, the weight of the water will help to hold it in place during rains, but .... have had to resand my inground 2 times and will have to do it a third time soon. It is on a hill and the water just runs under it!

The lining will not be easy - will seem to small and as you put the water in will seem like it is pulling away. This is where you will need help - make sure you have enough to hold it into place. It will stretch and conform fairly quickly. It is no fun to put back into place when it is full of water - trust me!

Alway mix the chlorine outside! Even then, be careful and never put the cover on the container if the chlorine is wet - I had a 13 year old son of a friend spend 1 week in pediatric intensive care because the chlorine bucket got wet and the cover was laying (not tightly secured) on the top of the bucket. He was swimming about 20 feet from the bucket when he inhaled the fumes and went to the hospital! Be careful!

The good news, the more you use it, the less you have to clean it! Using it keeps the water stirred up and the filter does its job. Don't use it for a couple of days and you will be vacuuming.

Be systematic with the testing of the water and the chemicals. Don't rely on sight, keep the water balanced and it will be easier to maintain.

Have I scared you enough yet? Don't really mean to - we had a great time using the pool growing up. Now that it is mine, it is a pain, but it will be fun again when the kids get old enough to invite their friends over (good way to see who they are hanging with and keep them safe at the house instead of breakin' into Grandx's truck)!

Re: above ground pools

I would pay the $550 and have the pool people do it. If the liner is not set right your warrenty might not cover it if it tears. My 24' was pro installed over 15 years ago and still has the orig. liner in it.

Re: above ground pools

MY - Ghana is only a "part time" residence. Looking forward to heading back to PA in 2 weeks! Miss the family!

In ground and above ground are basically the same. Above is a little easier to install because you do not have to dig as deep.

Pools are a lot of fun for the fam - but they are a lot of work for the maintenance man! We had ours installed professionally and after several years of watching and learning, do most of the repair/maintenance mayself.

I love our pool on the good days, and on the bad days I tell my wife we are either going to sell the house and build a new one that doesn't have a pool, or fill the money pit in! :D

Re: above ground pools

Curt from Oklahoma here. Take my advice, if you haven't already installed it, pay the $550. It is more than worth it. That is the going price here in OK. The headaches and troubles you WILL run into during installation are not worth it. I have the same pool you described and after watching my installation guys work, installing it in less than a day, I thanked the Good Lord I didn't try it myself. Save your fun for the deck and landscaping. After they installed the pool, I built a 12x25 deck and landscaped using white marble rock and plants - looks great, kids love it and most importantly, wife is very happy with it.
