I have a 1985 175Hp Johnson
It will not accelerate under load
In the yard with ears it accelerates
the fast idle works
but in the water under load it stalls no matter how slowly you advance the controll
compression is poor but I was hoping to get through this season before rebuilding
compression is 60-65 to 80 with the average being 70-75

Re: acceleration

Before you trash your motor do a thorough decarb on it and check the compression again with a different compression guage (in case the one you have is faulty - common problem).

Re: acceleration

Commish....to add to solittles good advice, change out the spark plugs if you haven't for a while.

The reason it idles well in the yard is there is no back pressure against the cylinders like there is when the rig is in the water. Makes a big difference as you already know.

Re: acceleration

Hate to say it, but my expirience tells me with that low of compression on all the cylinders. Its time for an overhaul.
De carbing it might help, but I doubt it will work magic.

Try that first you wont be out much.
