Acceptable prop shaft movement?

How much (if any) should the prop shaft move (forward and back). I noticed that I can move the prop about 1/8-1/4 inch. Is that too much? If so, what do I need to look at to fix it?<br /><br />Thanks in advance,<br />Will

Mine moves a little (1973 volvo 270). Maybe a 1/16” but not a 1/4”. Not knowing what you have, but generically most drives have a little play. A 1/4” sounds like you have gears that are a little worn. The only thing you can do about it is buy a new lower end. If it was me (if the drive isn't leaking oil) I would run it to I could afford to replace it. Do us a favor and post what you have, how old and measure exactly how much play you have at the prop and we will see.

Oppsss..<br /><br />Sorry about lack of info...<br /><br />1987 OMC 4.3l V6. I would say it is closer to the 1/8" than the 1/4".

If you haven't had any problems with it I wouldn't worry.
