The subject pretty much says it all. I zoned out and to top off my gear lube location I poured in the bottle I had in my hand that I didnt realize was actual quicksilver engine oil. I ony poured in about 1/3 to 1/2 max of a quart. Is this a problem? There is a high ratio of gear lube to engine oil in there (not sure without checking manual which is in my boat at marina). Will things be fine? Any danger leaving as is without redraining the gear oil and filling up? If there is, can I just pump out about a quart of what is on top of gear lube container and swap with the correct fluid (gear lube)? I ask this as there is possibility gear lube and engine oil dont mix righ t away and I can still save it.

Thanks and please help!

Patrick

Just remove the reservoir, dump it out and put in the right stuff. Unless you have been running it for a few hours it won't mix. If you have been running it, just drain the drive and the reservoir and refill.
It's not a good idea to ever mix oils unless it's an absolute necessity like filling a crankcase of an engine with gear lube because you are 10 miles out in the middle of nowhere in a storm. But change it immediatly on getting home.

i aint gonna question the change it just in case position..

but i dont believe there is much difference between merc engine oil and merc drive oil.. one is claimed to be a blend of 30 and 40 weight oils.. the other is a straight 30.. mixing em would probably produce a slightly different blend of 30 and 40 weight oils.. he he he

change it just in case thow..

trog100

What are you talking about trog????? Mercs gear lube is nothing like 30 or 40 W oils.
The older Volvo single prop drives like the 270, 280 and 290 single props used 30 or 40W engine oil, but NEVER did Mercruiser use engine oil.

You guys are great. This is my 2nd post and the response time is amazing. I'll just drain the reservoir and put in gear oil. I keep this at marina and they are *ss*holes about letting me drain gear oil out when I am there and it is in a dry stack. So it would be a pain in *** to totally drain from engine. I would have to trailer it out of lake and then do it somewhere. My trailer is being stored somewhere also. Big pain. I'll go with reservoir and just plugging in some gear lube. Thanks again

Sorry Trog, I'm with Don on this. Merc have only ever used gear oil, standard 80-90 type stuff, then moved to their own synthetic blend with 'High Performance'. Never recommended anything like an engine oil in the legs. Not even in the small outboards.

Chris............

P.S. If Don really did post something like that, give us the link so we can dump on him. :D

Sorry trog, me thinks you remember it wrong.
Like I said, volvo used engine oil in their single prop drives for years.

And I would deserve it Chris had I made a statement like that.

Here is the one I posted back in September.
Slightly oil covered.

And here is an earlier Volvo recommendation before they started calling the 30W oil Gear Lube so they could charge more for it.
