Ok, I am new to this power boating thing. (Primarily a sailboat person). I have 1988, Johnson 70 HP, 3Cyl.

I accidently started engine out of water (tilt up) last night. The engine ran for about 5 sec before I realized what happened and I shut it down.

I restarted the engine and it seemed to run OK. Anyway that I can tell if I screwed something up?

Thanks.

For 5 sec? I doubt if it hurt anything.Lower it down in the water and run test it with the cover off.Monitor the waterflow and touch check the heads. Not good to run the waterpump impellers dry.

I'm curious as to how you would accidentally start an engine in the tilt up position since its usually required to prime the fuel line before starting.Unless maybe you had one too many. ;)

The engine can readily start in the tilt up position if there is any fuel present.

I think the motor is probably trashed. I'll give you $500 for it as a "parts motor". :D

To be shure, check the water flow at the pee hole and also check your impeller.
Dont think it should have been any majoor damage done in 5 sec.
