Hi,
I have read in the threads people recoomending Acetone as a cleaner. What does it do? Also, I will be need to place a bead of 5200 between the winshield rail and the fiberglass of the boat. Could that also be preped with Acetone.
Thanks Roman

Acetone is a very effective degreaser, it also strips the oils from your skin though so wear gloves.

Roman, acetone will work great for cleaning where you need to run a bead.Do you need the strength of 5200 where you are sealing?????If you are just filling a gap for eye appeal or waterproofing, a silicone rubber may be a better choice. It is much smoother than 5200 and will wipe clean over the years easier.Charlie

Acetone is inexpensive (I pay about $7 a gallon) and effective on all sorts of stains. It works well as a degreaser (repacking bearings), it can be used to clean up after use of many types of paints (not water based), and it will remove both pine sap and black streak marks left by rollers from a light colored hull. That last one alone makes it worth its weight in gold.

Don't ever light a match near the stuff.

Thom

Do not use silicone based seal in a boat. Use marine seal instead like Sikaflex (291 or the stronger 292). Is available in white and black (291), white (292).
There is also Sikaflex 291 Lot, 295 UV and 296.
http://www.sikaindustry.com/ind/ipd-ma-products

I think it all depends on what you are trying to clean. Acetone is a very fast drying cleaner, I think it is a little slower than MEK (Methel Ethel Ketone) but is still faster than Mineral Spirits. My point is that for some substances, acetone may evaporate too fast to get the job done.

What? You don't like that white, dried, flakey, looking skin?

Acetone is great stuff, even gets rust stains out of gelcoat. But it also eats up gelcoat - regards gelcoat as just another substance to remove. Even if used litely on gel, wax area asap.

Besides Sudafed, acetone is used to make meth. So be careful who you tell you bought some. The girl at the Home Depot thinks I make it!

It works very well to clean stuff up and it dries real fast. Thats what I wanted.

Gloves are esential as in New mexico your hands are already dried out from the air.

Let me ask this- should I sand then acetone before I apply the Marinetex? Or just sand and wipe with water? The person who owned the boat before me din't take care of the very bottom or Keel of the boat.

Acetone, then sand, then acetone.

One little thing about sanding. There are materials, like wax, that it doesn't actually remove - sanding just grinds wax in, it doesn't remove it. So you wash with harsh detergent first to get off as much as possible, the dewax with Acetone or a commercial dewaxer, and then begin sanding. Use acetone with clean undied rags as a final wipe before you tack cloth before you paint.

Thom

Thom , could not have said that better.. clean it twice sand it clean it three times then clean it ... your paint will never fall off because you had the surface too clean.
