Acetone in my fuel?

I have often used a mixture of ETHANOL FREE gasoline in my car, truck, motorcycle, and deisel tractor with 1-3oz. of acetone per ten gallons of fuel. This increases fuel burn by reducing the surface tension of the liquid and cutting emissions by up to 60% because of better fuel atomization. I have improved the gas mileage in my beater Ford Escort from 37mpg to 43.4mpg (and more power).
So now I ask the all knowing and seasoned boat gurus, would you do this in your boat engine? I have read if the motor was made before 1988 you should not,but newer engines after that year its OK.

Remeber, ONE to THREE ounces to TEN GALLONS of gasoline.
Any thoughts on this?

This is an old wives tale. Mythbusters did something on this years ago as well, and found that adding acetone has no effect at all on fuel economy. They did it with both a carbureted car and a fuel injected car.

I say save the acetone for the toenails.

I read the materials used to make some seals/gaskets were different

I guess the fuel mpg savings on my car and having lighter exhaust on my tractor was a myth. OK Thank you

Maybe cuz I used free range gluten free GMO free acetone and the Myth Busters used the standard? I dunno.

Your welcome?

With all of the EPA regulations, as well as CAFE standards, if adding acetone increased fuel economy it would be mixed in at the refinery. And they do mix in a whole lot of additives at the refinery for exactly that reason. But acetone is not one of them.

Acetone is a much stronger solvent than gasoline. Use it in diesel at your own peril. Diesel engine depend on fuel for upper cylinder lubrication and you are thinning it, albeit not by much. There is no way 1-3 oz per 10 gallons will make any difference. If it did it would be mixed in, EPA would require it, and we would be paying for it.

My personal opinion is it will increase upper cylinder wear on any engine

Also bear in mind that some of the older boats used fiberglass fuel tanks which acetone could begin to soften the polyester resin in the fiberglass. Ethanol fuels are hard on fiberglass fuel tanks and may rupture them as well.

Re: Acetone in my fuel?

The only real way to test this is just as they do (have done) in a real lab. An engine on a stand in an environmentally controlled room with a constant known load.

AND/OR controlled road tests....... (Yeah........there's a 100mpg carburetor too!!!!!)

In a controlled test, you would need to do SEVERAL "control" AND TEST "runs" to establish any sort of baseline!!

Anecdotal and testimonial "evidence" is about as far as you can get from "accurate" & reliable.

Using acetone in a marine engine just ASKS for a failed fuel pump (melts the diaphragm, non-metal fuel lines, carb needle/seat, non-metal float, rubber o-rings, rubber/neoprene/viton components in EFI parts etc)

The other posters aren’t taking into account the “placebo effect” so if it’s working in all your other engines ---- of course it will work in your boat engine.

No I would not do it in my engine.
