say for some reason I wanted to run my 1970 4 hp evinrude in salt water, would it be a good idea to attach a piece of zinc to the motor somewhere so that the zinc gets corroded instead of the motor? I'm not sure how such a thing could be attached, but would such a thing work? I do not have very much knowledge about corrosioin anodes at all so please forgive my ignorance.

Is it just going to be a kicker and not stored in the water? If it is on a trailered boat and there is no battery power to create stray electricity ....there is no need.

Can you tilt it completely out of the water? If so, no zinc Anode is necessary, with a fiberglass boat. If not, find a place to put a zinc. It must be grounded to the motor. Someone around you may have an electricity leak into the water. Your anode will protect your motor.

With or without zinc, you still need to fresh water flush out the salt after every use for optimal engine life

it is on a small inflatable boat with a slatted floor, and it would be put in the water whenever it is brought on trips, like say for camping. the boat would be in the water for more than 2 days usually, but the motor would only be put in water when running. (I wouldnt leave it sitting in the salt water)

It's definitely not going to hurt anything to add a zinc anode down on your motor bracket somewhere. Scrape/remove all paint(so it's well-grounded) and bolt it right on there. You can buy those anodes at any boat shop, just find one that fits the area where you bolt it. Maybe it'll make you just feel better about it. Good Luck!

"Maybe it'll make you just feel better about it. " That's about all the good it will do.
