Hello every body I was chaging the carpet to my 1978 sandollar 15' tri-hull, and I note that the old fiber glass was not to good so my questions is should I first add a coat of fiber glass then install the new carpet, and if so will it protect the wood? The wood is in great condition and I want to keep it that way any help would be great thank you!!! :D

Ok.. Wood's in good shape.. :)

Before I would do any glass work, I'd make absolutely sure the wood underneath is 100% dry... Adding glass over wood that has moisture in it will ony help accellerate the rot...

In my opinion, best bet on fiberglass over dry wood would be a couple generous coats of epoxy.. Extra fiberglass cloth probably not necessary... ;)

Thanks for the reply! So you think instead of putting fiber glass use eproxy instead? So I should just clean every thing the floor then add eproxy and it will protect the wood thanks for your help!! What kind of eproxy should I by???? Thanks again!!! :D

Re: ADD fiber glass coat???????

I work at a marina and am currently in the process of tearing out rotted wood from an old boat. I will replace the rotted wood with treated wood and cover it completely with fiberglass and polyester resin. Very few boats have epoxy, most are made of polyester and glass, called FRP, Fiber Reinforced Plastic. Epoxy is excellent, but more expensive than polyester. You can buy polyester resin at any discount department store in the automotive department. Epoxy you probably have to get from a marine supply store.

I have never seen a boat where the wood is good but the FRP has gone bad. But your boat may have been made with treated wood. Older boats were not.
Anyway, if the plastic looks bad, you may wish to merely sand it and coat it with gel coat. The outside of modern FRP boats is a skin of gel coat.
