Re: Add Tach to 94 model Evinrude 48SPL
You will need a marine outboard tach. There is an setting on the back that must be set to match the number of pulses the generator makes. If you have the slim rectangular control box that matches the '94 Evinrude outboard, then there is a 3 pin female connector near the ignition key. That connector has the tach sending wire (grey), power (blue or red) and ground (black). Look in the Mega Mall and you will find the wire harness that plugs right in there and tachometers that will work for you. Tachs start at about $60.

I believe your 48 special is 2 cylinder motor. Depending on what electric charging system you have the setting will be either 5 or 6. If you have power tilt and trim, it probably has 12 amp alternator and use the 6 setting. If it is a manual start use the 5 setting. My Johnson/Evinrude manuel for 1993 indicates that the 48 hp model uses the 5 setting, but that may have changed in 94 depending on what charging system was used.

No damage can be done by using the wrong setting in your case. The RPM will be off a bit, by about 20%.

Someone with more difinitive info can validate if its the 5 or 6 setting for the 48 special.

Mark.
