Can I add some sort of charging system to my 96' evinrude 48 spl? I m figuring an alternator is out of the question, so is it some kinda stator ring or something. Has anyone added a charging system to this motor, if so is it hard, can i buy a kit or parts still?
any idea on cost?

thanks

That motor should already have a charging system.

wow, i didn't know that, so when i run my motor it's putting out 12 volts somewhere, can anyone tell me where this is? what I'd like to do it have it charge my starting battery and my trolling motor battery. is there a plug or some wires i need to access?

any help would be great.

when the battery cables are connected to the starting battery it is charging. you will have to install a battery switch, and the problem is that you will have to make long fast runs to charge the trolling battery. it's designed to maintain the starting battery, not charge a dead battery.

Check to see if it is working by connecting a voltmeter to the battery terminals. Should show approx 12 volts when not running. After it runs awhile the voltage will increase. If it increases, it is good. No increase, it isn't working. Ain't no way it will keep up with the juice required by a trolling motor, if you run the troller any significant amount of time at all. But it will be fine for keeping your starting battery up and a few accessories like running lights, fish finder, and a small automatic bilge pump.
