adding a tach to a 50 hp 2 stroke merc

I have a 2 stroke 4 cyl 50 hp merc that I wanna put a tach on. I have an outboard tach and it has the little dial on the back that im told is to be set to the number of pulls off my rectifier or alternator? how do I figure out what that number is ?

Set it for 12 poles or 6 pulses. Depends on which tach you have.

its just an old faria outboard tach,and the dial has 1-6,so I should put it on 6?

On some of those Faria tachs the proper setting would be 5.
