Re: Adding an hr meter

Howdy,

Pretty easy. Most hr meters only need 12v+ and ground. They're usually connected to an electrical component or connection that's "hot" when the key is on.....Of course, if you leave the key on, the hr meter is ticking!

Attach one wire to neg and the other to switched 12v+

That switched 12v+ will be one of the purple wires under the dash. AVOID hooking it directly to the ignition switch. The purple power wire to any of the instruments is the same thing.

What is the downside of connecting directly to the switch?

Can't you hook it to the tach wire. That would give you a true engine operating time.

You CANNOT hook an hour meter to the tach feed. 1) it does not carry 12 volts and 2) it is an AC signal. The hour meter is nothing more than a 12 volt clock. It needs only 12 volts and ground to operate. It runs as long as 12 volts is applied.
