plugged catalytic converter?
like, since new maybe?
I dunno - that can't be right- My Cadillac Deville with it's 275HP V8 gets better mileage

The old K cars used to have a switch on the throttle linkage, when you pressed hard on the accelerator the switch cut the A/C compressor....maybe you could rig up something...

If you are going to get into it, do it right. Don't waste money on a header if the rest of the system is restricted. No net gain but you will be poorer.
I had an early 80's Toyota 4x4 with the 22R engine. Added a Weber 40MM side draft carb, header, K&N filter and replaced the entire exhaust system with 2" pipe and finally replaced the cam with a Competition cam. Never had it dynoed, but the difference was night and day when running the 36" super swamper tires :D

That MPG sounds good, my '97 Dakota 5 speed 4 banger gets 20 mpg in town or highway, and about 12 when towing.

Hey John,

Welcome to the world of small 4 bangers. People don't realize how hard a 4 has to work at highway speeds, especially in a truck.

I've spoken with a 30 year mechanic about my gas milage and his eyes were large until I mentioned the rpm required to do 70, then he said, "yea its your gear ratio, no doubt".

I don't really have the nickels to do much with it right now. That same mechanic said to modify in the following order to take advantage of the law of deminishing returns:

1. headers--most bang for the buck
2. hi-flo tailpipe
3. intake mods
4. cam mods

2 and 3 are a tie really, but I had to put one first. He didn't say the gas milage would go up much, but did say the pep should be better.
