have read in the forum from a member that he adds a little oil to the gas. if he is reading this topic please let me know how much he uses. I have a vro system on my 1985 evinrude 50hp. motor runs like a bear and want it to stay what way..he said omc suggests a little oil when running high rpm's. keep thinking a little safe than sorry.

I have read the same post. I cannot find anywhere in my owners manual where it says to do that and my 1986 Evinrude 70 HP motor runs 6000 RPM. That being said if you are running the original VRO pump in your motor it's time to update as that pump is at the end of it's life. IF your motor was mine and it was the original pump I would disconnect the the oil line from the VRO and run the motor 50-1 pre-mix. Then I would buy another VRO pump and go another 30 yrs.

I'd want to know if the original VRO pump is actually using/mixing oil into the fuel. Mark the oil level on the oil tank reservoir. run the engine. If you see that the oil tank goes down with use, then the VRO pump is consuming oil and is mixing it correctly. If you have no idea if it's working at all, you can put 50 to one in the main fuel tank in addition to the oil-only in the oil tank. That will technically double oil your engine. While the engine will run with a lot of smoke, it will not hurt the engine. Run the engine long enough to be sure that the oil level in the VRO tank is being consumed normally, and discontinue adding oil into the gas tank.

No real point to adding oil to the gas in a VRO system unless you are disabling the VRO's oil injection.

You either trust the VRO to give the right oil... or you don't trust it at all.

Double oil fouls plugs if you aren't running high speed all the time. The engine needs to be well above idle to burn the extra oil.
