Adding Permanent Rod Holders To My Boat

My 20' boat is aluminum and there is plenty of room to add permanent rod holders on the sides and/or back. I see that these rod holders can be straight up and down or angled. The angled seems much harder to install (getting the angle right that is). Is there any disadvantage/advantage to the straight vertical rod holder? Or should I consider an angled? Any chance the rods will pop out of the vertical ones when running wide open? Thanks :)

if you are going to troll - you won't like that style. we have the titelok triple holders and move them from the back of the boat to the sides - depending on what type of fishing we are doing.

we troll a LOT and that drove is to choose this style. we do have a set of the thru-gunnel style and rarely use them - theya slo hang down into the sidewalls and hog up some space. JMHO

Do you have a picture of the tite-loks installed? I don't see a pic on their website of how it mounts/works. Thanks.

Re: Adding Permanent Rod Holders To My Boat

titelok.com.....I was just there. I should mention that at the back of the boat there are 2 removeable Titeloks now. They were installed by the previous owner for what look to have been 2 downriggers that used to be there. Adding 2 permanent holders on either side in back would give me 4 total. If I do install permanents, the angle ones would seem to be best, but I am worried about how you get that angle right. I need to think about or hear from someone with experience. The back of the boat had plenty of room for them. Hard to tell from the pic, but just past where the side meets the back there is a very wide space.

i have always use the angled permanent mount, you just drill and hole and then oblong it with a jig saw, with tape on the bottom of the saw, and a fine blade. make sure you have clearance under neath.

I once drilled an oblong/oval hole using a hole saw. Made a wedge with the angle I needed, clamped it to the workpiece, and drilled into it. Worked ok, would probably work for angled rod holders too.

The issue is that there is a lot of some kind of sprayed insulation foam under the aluminum where it would go. I would hate to take out more foam than needed. No matter, thanks for all the help :)

Re: Adding Permanent Rod Holders To My Boat

I found a pic for you - you can see the rod holders attached and if you look at the other photo - you can see the mounting plate. We have four plates mounted for the triples -- two at the stern and one each on the port and starboard. We also have four singles and two of the tilted thru-mounts (Personally, I dislike those - but they are good for holding our nets. Moving it is a snap.

They are 'permanent' when they are screwed in - but it's nice to have the option to take them off the boat when you want (or when towing the kids in the tube).

What's nice about the titelok (or any adjustable) style is that you can adjust the angle from straight up to parallel with the water. We troll a lot on Lake Erie for steelies and walleye - this allows us to get six rods off the back of the boat and adjust the angles so we don't get tangled. We also have a planer mast at the bow and move the triples at the sides when running the big boards. depends on how versatile you need to be. They aren't the cheapest model out there - but for the type of fishing we do - and how much we do go out - worth the money to us.

Re: Adding Permanent Rod Holders To My Boat

The flush rod holders aren't worth the effort in my opinion. The previous owner of my starcraft put them in my boat and they suck. I put on some similar to what Tashasdaddy posted and they work reasonably well. I don't do a lot of trolling in my boat so they are fine for my boat.

My brother-in-law has the tite-locks installed and they are very very good. His boat is set up for trolling for salmon and walley in Lake Michigan. If you do a lot of fishing, especially trolling, I would highly recommend the tite-locks

I need a couple more holders. Do you think the tite-locks will work when tuna fishing?

Well, I've never been tuna fishing. With fish that size, you might want to go with the Tite-lock fixed model. The adjustable model may be strong enough, but I would get some info from a tuna fisherman who uses them.

I'd say,,, no. Too weak for that application.

What ever type of rod holder you use, make sure it's strong enough to withstand the biggest fish you could catch. I lost one of the graphite (plastic) rod holders when a striper hit,,, striper, rod, reel and top half of the rod holder went into the drink

I won't use anything but metal anymore. I use these rod holders:

and these bases:

i013232sn01.jpg

with the threaded hole tapped out to 3/8 or 1/2". And then a steel nut installed below the aluminum base so the aluminum does not strip out. On my jjon boat I welded an all-thread nut onto a piece of 1/2 steel tubing and then bolted it to the gunnel.

I'm going after 30-50# stripers, sooo....

Those seem to have a lot sitting on top of the gunnel. I've seen this type on offshore boats, puts the tube into the gunnel:

Personally, I don't like the Perko's though, rod sits too high up and too close to the center line of the boat. I like my rods hanging off the sides of the boat,,, depends on your fishing style...

I just ripped 4 of those Perko's of my old boat,,, hint hint...

Re: Adding Permanent Rod Holders To My Boat

Thanks for all the great responses. I intend to fish for big stripers at times and maybe even some smaller tuna when they are closer than 10 miles off. I have room in the back of my boat to install the angled flush mount holders so that the rod is angled out perpendicular to the boat. I could also add the multiple titeloks if I wanted also. I'll take a pic on Saturday when I am at the boat and show you all what I mean :)

I should have said 30-50# land locked stripers...

Probably not too many east coast guys fishing for big stripers from a 14' jon boat, heck even my Crestliner would probably be too small for the waters you guys cover...

I like that stand up helm. That's what I have, only aluminum.
I put permanent gunnel rod holders on my SeaArk. Not too hard to oblong the holes in the 1/8" aluminum.:)
