Hi all,

I am getting ready to rebuild my lower unit. When I put it back, do I need some kind of sealant on the mating surfaces of the lower unit to the leg? I remember reading something about adding non-hardening sealant somewhere. Do I need to put sealant anywhere? Thanks.

Depends on the make and model motor you have.

Sorry, I don't have a manual for that motor.
Was there any evidence of sealant in there when you took it apart?
Hopefully someone with a manual will come along and provide answer.

I would say, yes, use some marine type sealant (form a gasket.) Also put some sealant on the threads too. And no, not the hardening type used for repairing cracks in metal.

clymer manual says to use a bead of RTV along the gearcase mating surface and also as spartanpele says on the mounting screw threads.
