Adding speakers to the stern.

I would like to add 2 5.25 speakers to the stern of my 1999 crownline 202. The cutout for these speakers is 4.75. I have enough room to add them under the vents. My question is Would that structurally hurt the boat? Like dragging towables? I'm attaching a picture of a 202. Not my boat but same style. I want sound on the back but also don't want to screw anything up. Surely someone else has done this. Thanks in advance for any advice.

first, you wont hear the speakers other than sitting at rest. 5.25's wont be loud, even with an amp. you need lots of power and bigger speakers (think more of the wake-board tower speakers). also, most speakers will die a painful death at the back of the boat exposed to the elements. even "outdoor" or water proof speakers.

second, structural load path depends on how your transom is laid out.

I like my speakers inside my boat so everyone else doesnt have to listen to my music... when we float around on tubes and rafts behind the boat, I throw a waterproof bluetooth speaker on the swim deck or put it in the tube cupholder... probably your best bet... my jbl flip4 bluetooth speaker somehow sounds better than most 5.25" speakers I've heard anyways.

I am not sure what is going on here. You all saw my speakers. I got the factory set up as far as stereo and amp a 780 watt kenwood. turn it up haif way someone in a boat next to you would have no problem hearing your music. In the boat your ears bleed.

In my situation we have some people in the boat and some outside floating. I just want sound on the outside that we can hear while floating. Yes it is plenty loud inside but in order to hear the music outside it has to be so loud inside that people cant talk. My question is if I cut two holes under the vents will the back of the transom blow out when I'm trying to pull a fat guy out of the water on a pair of skis?

Honestly I seen that type get pulled out and nothing done. I would find mickeys boat. And look at his speaker enclosures. This way they are not taking away from boat strength and look good. He used PVC pipe to make these. 3 or so small screw holes attaching these would not hurt it at all.

I would be worried about structural problems if you cut two 5" holes in the back as you plan. Even moreso if you pull things using the ski tow hook. No way I'd put large holes back there.

depends on how your transom is laid out and designed.

without first-hand knowledge, we are only guessing if the structure would be compromised. For example, the tow rope in my boat has an aluminum plate in the transom layup.
