I have a 1985 OMC 1.6 ltr. SeaDrive that I would like to add a temperature sensor and a gauge to this motor. I have replaced the thermostates and the water pump assembly but I still get the alarm to go off once in a while. I would like to know how I can add these components so I can monitor this better, if it is possible. There is plenty of water coming out of the "tell tale" all the time. I would also like to know where I can get the parts I need to accomplish this task. Thanks.

If the alarm is stil going off I'd think we'd want to address that first. I see that we've done a complete cooling system service -- almost. The next step, if you haven't already, is to pop the heads off and look at the condition of the gaskets and deflectors. Especially the deflectors. We might even want to flow some water thru the heads while they're off just to make sure one isn't clogged.

Hi Dale. I replaced the complete powerhead on this motor 2 seasons ago. It only has around 30 hours on it. Just to let you know, when I start it up sometimes the alarm is on and doesn't go off till I turn it off and wait a minute and restart. I can still pull the heads and do what you said anyway but I wonder if it's needed. Thanks.

One thing to find out is if the alarm is real or not.If the horn sounds in less than 2 minutes,at idle,it is probably a false warning. That means the sensors or horn are causing the problem.

If the engine is actually getting hot,it is a different problem.

DHP

I pulled the heads and it was clean as a whistle. I ran water through the heads and nothing came out but clean water. I guess I'll have to get another horn and see if it makes a difference. I would still like to add the temp. sensor and gauge if this is possible on this motor, but I haven't recieved a response to this yet. Thanks.

How are the deflectors?

Deflectors are clean also. This unit is run in freshwater only. Everything is like new.

OK. If the deflectors are still round and the head gaskets OK we should be good to go. We still need to check the sensors and the horn itself like DPH mentions above.

You can add a temp gauge. The sender is in a small bracket that goes under a water jacket cover bolt on either head. The kit will come with detailed instructions. Very simple.

I did check the sensors and horn and I have come to the conclusion that the horn is the problem. I'm replacing the horn and will be ordering a gauge kit.Who do you recommend I get this from. There are a lot on the market and I don't know if the ones I see that show a gauge include a sensor. Thanks to all for the help.

All the temp gauge kits I've seen include the sender and wire. If it doesn't say "kit" it may just be the gauge. The one from BRP or Teleflex should work just fine.

The temp gauge would be in addition to a water pressure gauge. If you don't have a pressure gauge then I'd install that first.

Thanks Dale. I'll do so more research on the water pressure "kits" since you are the first to mention this. I'll check the BRP and Teleflex sites to see. Thanks again.

I like to watch the pressure pretty close. That tells us what the motor is seeing. It will alert you to a problem before the motor gets hot. I look at it like this - the water pressure gauge tells us what's happening now. From that we can see what's going to happen. The temp gauge tells us what already happened.
