Hi.
I would like to add a temp gauge to my 64 merc but see there is nowhere to put one.
does anyone have any idea how to do this or i was thinking of using this

NEW LCD Digital Fridge Freezer Fish Tank Thermometer Temperature | eBay

and using that metal putty stuff to attach to the side of the block then running longer cable to the front of the boat.

IF i have to go this way where would be the best place to put the sensor and what temp should it be roughly around?

Thanks

Re: Adding temp to merc 64

depending on your model, there is a port on the top of the motor at the back, you could add a temp probe or even a water pressure gauge I think. Most just run that to a hose and create a tell tale. Old mercs have no thermostat, so generally if they are peeing, they are cooling

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah i see a stainless bolt with flat screw driver head on it, how can i remove this as it wont budge, ive just tried with an impact driver and still no movement and snapped my bit.
It would be ideal to have a probe in there as well as the visual so i can set an alarm to go off it it gets too hot, i don't trust these oldies :)

Cheers

An impact driver should pull it out. Get a good bit for it and try again. Try smacking it CW before trying CCW, just might work. You can put an alarm in there if you want, but it won't get too hot unless your impeller disintergrates or run it out of water.. If anything some of the old engines suffered from overcooling

You can also get a sensor that bolts on to your cylinder head, together with a mating gauge, from iboats.
