I am waiting for a Service Manual on CD after not being able to successfully download a manual 1 and 2 for a 1973 Mercruiser 165 with an inline chevy 250cid 6 cylinder.
What I want to know is how and where to check and add fluid to the tilt pump? What kind of fluid?

Ayuh,... On the upper portside foreward corner of the pump body, you should see 2 screws about 1/4" apart,...
1 is the fill, 'n the other is the vent...

I use Atf....

Re: Adding tilt fluid to Mercruiser 165

from s/m #1...

"on units equipped with power tilt or power trim, check hydraulic system oil level periodically as follows:
1. drive unit must be all-the-way down in normal operating position.
2. remove ''fill'' screw. (fig. 2)
3. if oil level is low, fill pump to bottom of threads with MS rated 20W oil. Do not over-fill.
4. replace ''fill'' screw. "

the fill screw is the lower of the two screws.. fwiw, i use a wire tie to measure my trim pump oil level height. the fill screw is not in a position that i can observe the trim pump oil level on my boat. best i can figure. about 1 7/8'' high on a stick stuck to the bottom of the reservoir is a full reservoir. trim full in/down..

from what i've found, 20w oil just plain isn't available. and i l did try to get some. even ended up at the oem oil companies trying to find out if i could get some. it's nla..

i use 10w30, 10w40, 30w. i don't know what all i got in there. mostly because i don't know what was in there to start with. what i do know is it is motor oil. if ya got motor oil, stick with motor oil. if ya got hydraulic fluid, stick with hydraulic fluid. don't mix the two.

best i've been able to determine is that the trim system will operate on just near any kind of fluid, hydraulic fluid or oil, as long as it's the similar kind of fluid..
