adjusting idle on 1985 85hp force

How do you adjust the idle on a 1985 85hp force outboard. It has 3 carbs. Right now its idling at about 1000-1100 rpms.

Idle speed in neutral should be somewhere around 1000 RPM. Idle in forward gear in the water should be around 700-750 RPM.

This is adjusted by the idle stop screw on the tower where the carb link ball end is. Loosen the locknut and unscrew the screw 1/8 turn at a time to lower idle speed. Below 700 RPM and the engine will stall while docking. Then you will put on a show for all those people at the ramp as you scramble to try to fend off the dock and hit it.

Timing should be about 0 degrees plus or minus 2 deg. at idle.

I guess I"m gonna have to get some help setting the idle in gear then. The gf doesn't have her boating license.

Sixteen will get you twenty! Unless the GF will get you put in jail for doing you know what, she doesn't need a license. LOL

Actually, I think only those born after Jan 01, 1982 need a certificate here in PA. AND, as long as she doesn't look pre-teen, I don't believe the locals will bother you if she is just holding the wheel at idle while you adjust.

AND: Idle in gear is so slow, that you really don't need her. You could set it with the boat tied to the dock. It won't be too much different than moving.-----Don't tell her I said you don't need her---you know how women can be LOL.

we were both born after that cut off. So we both need it. The warden can be a pain especially cause they are installing a new bridge in the area and crews are around.
