I have a 40 hp 1962 lark. #35531. I am wondering if there is a good way to tell when the points are fully open. The manual I have says that the shaft has the word "top" printed on it to tell when the rubbing block is in the right spot for full opening of the points, but mine has no such word. Anyone have any tricks to use to tell when points have reached fully open?

When I had to adjust the points on my 1970 60 HP Johnson I just turned the motor over by hand and watched the points open and close, and after studying it for a half dozen or so times I was able to see where the one point would be completely open and then start to close... then I guaged how much of a turn on the ratchet would take to go between the point being opened, and starting to close. Then I would use my feeler gauge and insert it in between the point and SLOWLY turn the motor by hand. When I felt tension on the feeler gauge I would pull it out and try again the next revolution. After a few tries I was able to determine the point where the feeler gauge felt loose before tightening up and determined that it was the point of being full yopen. After putting it all back together it seemed to work as I turned the keep and .....vrrroooomm.. the sweet sound of a purring Johnson :)

Hopefully, someone else can give you a more technical way, but if not, you can rely on this procedure to hopefully get you back into the water :)

Hope this helps :D

Re: adjusting points

Align the crankshaft key way with the points rub block. Move the crank back and forward a bit to see if the points start to close from that point. Key way should be the high point.

Re: adjusting points

As above. And if you take the plugs out it's way easier to turn the engine over.
