Adjusting shift cables on Volvo 270

Shifter sticks and shifts really hard into reverse on my Volvo 270 outdrive. Where do I adjust this cable at, and is this something I can do myself? Thanks.

If it shifts real hard, adjusting isn't going to help. You either need a new cable, or you could have problems with the drive.<br />Disconnect the cable from the drive and see if the cable moves freely. Have someone try to hold the cable from moving, if he can hold it enough to cause you to feel it in the shifter, then the cable is bad.

Mine does the same thing. I actually broke the cable but the problem I found was in the rod that pushes on the reverse hook lock. I wonder if I can just remove it. I have tried to adjust it but no luck, I applied grease and it works better now but it is still stiff. If anyone has had experience with this let me know, thanks.
