The Spanish bowline is a knot, but its a double loop knot normally used when you need a backup anchor point for a load like abseiling. I use an anchor bend, on my anchors, never fails.

By the way, a Spanish bowline exists, as skimmer said, and he's right on with the anchor bend! but this brings back fond memories of yrs ago, it was a standing joke with my friends, and I, on the job. In knot tying class, anytime anyone was about to tie any kind of knot, one of these clowns would yell out, "Tie a Spanish bowline in it!" followed by howling laughter.

Here's one for ya, being an old salt like I am ;) I learned this from an old reliable source, Popular Mechanics :D
How to tie a bowline: Start with an overhand loop, then pretending the end of the rope in your right hand, (if right handed) is a "rabbit", the rabbit comes up out of the hole (the loop), goes around the tree (behind the standing line), usually in your left hand, and goes back down the hole, Walla! a bowline. Practice a little, you'll get it, it looks like a loop with a square knot on it when done.

I know, it's a lot easier with pictures, but then anybody could do it

Re: Adventures in Knot tying

On my little Bayliner adventure, one of the new boats (I think it was the Maxum 2900 SE) had a nice anchor rigged on the bow, chain around the windlass and down into the locker. We rafted up at the Riverfront in Downtown Knoxville, and somebody suggested that the one with the anchor should drop a hook to help out. So they idle up in front of all of us and let her fly . . . there was only an anchor and about 10 feet of chain, no line to complete the rode . . . Splash . . . Ooops :D
