I'm about to pull the trigger and put a merc bigfoot 60 on my 20 foot pontoon. Any cautions or downsides?

Re: Advice for new poster

Hi John -

I put a Bigfoot on my 21' Sun Tracker last week. I had-had a 50 hp Merc 2 stroke. I used it four days in a row over the weekend and am thus far very happy with it. It's got decent power and has been very good on gas. Not sure what you plan to use your boat for - I would say for something in the lines of tubing it will be a bit slow except for very small children.

As far as downsides, I did a lot of investigating prior to buying mine and had a hard time finding anyone that had a negative thing to say about the Bigfoot. Is the one you're looking at brand new? If so, it would be fuel injected, which has been a really nice change vs my cold blooded 50 hp.

Good luck. Keep us posted!

I have a 60 bigfoot on my 20'. It won't break any speed records, but I'm quite happy with it. Even after sitting for 3 weeks, it starts with the first click of the key, and really good on fuel as well. I burn about a gallon or so for each hour of cruising.

The engines on a Big Foot vs the standard motor are the same. Only the lower unit changes so comments for a standard motor will also apply to a Big Foot.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, the engine will be new and it is going on a 20 foot Cherokee Ranger. I customized it for fishing myself but am not gifted mechanically so the new technology excites me. I had on an old Evinrude 70 hp so the salesman told me the bigfoot will actually be faster than that one.

Again, thanks.
