I have a deep v sylvan with a 30 hp Johnson tiller that is a bit underpowered with 2 people and gear. I would like to upgrade to a 50 tiller but am not sure if I want 2 stroke or 4. I do troll so the 4 stroke would be nice for that but from what Ive seen with smaller 4 strokes they take forever to reach plane. Im leaning towards a 2 stroke Yamaha. Does anyone know when they were last made? I know all the new ones now are 4 stroke I think. Honda is an option too as is a new Nissan 2 stroke. I prefer used due to cost but they are hard to find (within 10 yrs old). Anyone got one they want to sell or can tell me why I shouldnt get a used newer model Yamaha 50 tiller 2 stroke? Open for suggestions. Thank you.

P.S I heard many Yamahas can be converted from remote to tiller. is that right?

As this is a tiller I suggest looking for the best condition 50hp you can find as there is no need to worry about steering and control connections. Brand to me wouldn't play a part as all of these were mass produced and mostly reliable. Only cosideration would be local parts availablity.

Sorry to hear that! Suppose I'm very lucky with the location I'm in.

Where you are they are common thanks to Al Lindner. Around here...forget it.

Re: Advice needed for 50 hp tiller purchase

I re-powered my 16' Lund (non-deep V) tiller from a Evinrude 35 to a used Honda 50 4-stroke. I am very pleased with the results! I feel it planes out plenty quick and I gained almost 10 mph on the top end. But maybe a flat hull planes out quicker than a deep-V, I don't know.

I was under the impression that most any outboard could be converted to a tiller if it was originally available that way. Whether it would be cost affective may be another story. . .

Re: Advice needed for 50 hp tiller purchase

Since the goverment has mandated that all new outboards must meet pollution standards, most manufactures have gone to 4 stroke motors to comply. A good used 2 stroke will outpreform a 4 stroke on most any day, as long as it is and has been maintained. The only trouble one should have is parts and the majior manfactured motors from the 50's are still around or has been reproduced and fairly easy to get. Changing a motor to tiller can be done but the $$$ to do so can be rather bad. A good 2 stroke will idel all day just as good as a 4 stroke and the prop has alot to do with what you do most, troll or cruse, forward or backward, is up to each as what is best for them. Myself I perfer 2 stroke and the Etec motors new today is one of the best.

From what you have heard are most people satisfied with the E-Tec? Are they pricey? Also a late model Yamaha 2 stroke would be nice if I could find it.

Sad to say but a road trip may be in order for your quest.

Re: Advice needed for 50 hp tiller purchase

Consider widening your window of used 2 stoke options and look at a 2 cyl OMC (80s-90s). Finding a good used Yami as you describe is very hard, even here in MN.

I faced a very similar situation myself last year. Ultimately I went with the OMC and have been very happy. In hindsight I'm glad I bought it over the Yami. The OMC is just so much more common, meaning it was much easier to find the right one and negociate a good price. Getting used parts, service or just advise will be so much easier.

Whichever you choose enjoy the extra horses!

Re: Advice needed for 50 hp tiller purchase

Many outboards can be converted to a tiller even if the didn't have it as an option. On OMC's the tiller connects to the same post on the motor as the remote steering and this mount is standard to all of them. I just picked up a tiller and bolted it on, the only issue is the throttle cable, but it was a simple modification to hook it up. My tiller handle was from a 20HP motor and I put it on my 90.
