My father in law just aquired a 56 mark 25 Hurricane. We are going to try to get this old gem going. He is an auto mechanic, so he has a pretty good knowledge base. I am no mechanic, but I do own two small 1960's Johnson outboards, that I have worked on, mainly simple stuff like carb rebuild and water pump replacement. He says it has good compression and good spark. He also said the only thing wrong with it is a broken pull start. I know that it will also need a carb rebuild, and a new impellar. I have not even seen the motor yet. The research that I have done so far tells me that parts are a little hard to come by, and you need some special tools, that are no longer availabe, to work on these mercurys. What are your thoughts, can some of these special tools be fabricated. Are these motors similiar to the Johnson/Evinrudes of that same era, I mean as far as dropping the lower unit, shift dicconnect, to acsess the water pump. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of essential sites for anyone working on a vintage Merc:<br /><br />John's Old Merc Q and A board is home to the finest collection of old Mercury experts on the web. Seriously.<br /><br /> http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/mercboard/index.htm <br /><br />Grubbs Marine has info and parts for your motor:<br /> http://www.oldmercs.com/ <br /><br />Here is Grubb's page on your motor:<br /> http://www.oldmercs.com/mk25.html <br /><br />There are significant differences between the Mercs and the JohnnyRudes. A manual will be essential, not cheap at $50 but will pay for itself in the first hour of shop time you don't pay for. You can get the manual, and a parts list, from Grubbs.

First no they are not the same as J/Rudes except in 2 cycle principal. The first thing to do is buy a Mecrury Marine service manual and follow it, there are no short cuts on the old Mercs, if he plans to keep the engine it's a must. If he has questions ask them here one at a time and he will get awnsers I am insulted at the thought of another forum being recommended over this one, all the old mechanics aren't dead some of us worked on them when the were almost new and still repair them everday

Laddies,<br />I did not mean to slight the experts and the expertise on this site, and there are many like yourself. What I should have said, and I do think this bears out, is that John's site is particularly focused on the vintage Mercs, while this site covers all years. The difference, from my perspective, emerges not so much in the quality of the answers one gets to the questions so much as what can be learned from reading other posts and responses, and over there the conversation stays pretty much on older motors. <br /><br />That said, I also find that the iBoats site is much better in terms of search capability and archives. I use both sites (as do many here), and I appreciate both sites. Please accept my apology for any unintended offense given. I've learned a lot from your posts here.
