Advice on 10 HP Montgomery Ward Sea King

I just got a 10 HP Wards Sea King. This is my first motor. It starts up after one or two pulls which I think is a good sign. The previous owner didn’t have much history on it. He said it came with a RIB and he replaced it with a propane motor so it’s been stored for a few years.

I’ve done some research on what to replace:
- impeller
- gear oil
- spark plugs
- spark plug wires

I can’t find the correct spark plug wires so I was wondering if anyone can advise? Also, anything else I should work on?

I believe the plug wire come with the coils so changing them is gonna be costly
and probably not needed.
Run it after dark in a deep bucket and see if there is any arching??
You can cover them in shrink tube and liquid electric tape.
Ugly but works good.

Yes on the other stuff.

The mid section has a grease fitting, heat it up before adding grease.
The old grease can turn solid after time and adding new grease can push the zerk out.
There might be bushing at the top and bottom of the kingpin, don't overheat.

jerryjerry05 Thanks. How do I know if a carburetor rebuild is necessary? I was planning on using Seafoam as I’ve heard some people get good results with it. Also, when I take off the cowling, I see some shiny, black residue kind of all around and it smells like gas. So I assume there’s a little bit of a leak somewhere. Should I be worried and address this right away? How do I know where to start?

Take the carb off and remove the float bowl.
If there is any crud or buildup??
Then clean.it.

Seafoam is a waste of $$(my opinion)
A can of carb cleaner and Dawn soap is what I use.
Remove the air screw, screw it in and remember the turns so you can put it back,
then spray the cleaner in all the tiny holes and crevices.

The bowl screw might???? be the main jet???? if there are any holes make sure they are clear.
Make sure the jets are clear.

Then wash in warm water with Dawn.
Blow dry and reinstall.
No WD or silicone sprays.
Reset the air screw to the original setting or 1 1/2 turn out.
