I've been looking for a used pontoon boat, I recently found the following:

24' 1996 Sun Tracker Pontoon Boat ( Fun Barge ) with 40hp Mercury Force outboard runs and starts great . The interior is in great condition. Has a new electric anchor with the control on the console, matching snap down cover and bimini top. 2005 Flote- On bunk trailer. Don't know too much more at this point.

It is in excellent condition. Current owner is asking $7900.00

I've looked at dozens over the last 2 months and have found that pricing is all over the board.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Re: Advice on 1996 Sun Tracker

I have a '08 Sun Tracker. Some call this brand an entry level boat, But I am quite happy with mine. When dealing with a '96, it's more about the condition and how well it's been looked after rather than the brand. Check for soft spots in the deck and general condition. The motor is another story. Is it a Mercury or a Force? Mercury is good, very common and parts are plentiful. Force do not have a good reputation, are no longer in business, and parts are no longer available. In either case, 40 hp would be considered underpowered. I have a 60 on mine and many people have 75 to 115 hp on theirs. Prices vary depending on area. I don't know your location so I cannot comment on this.

Seems high with a 40 on it. I have a 94 with a 115 and still which I had more motor. I paid 4000 for mine but from a buddy. It was well worth 8 -9K.

They can put the word "Mercury" around that Force all they want but it won't change that fact that it's still a Force.......and you can't get a lot of parts for one and it's only going to get worse. That price seems way high. We need to know your location though because, as you mentioned, prices vary wildly but are regional.

I agree, from what I've seen, it seems high for the 40 hp. power plant every where but Michigan. West Michigan, to be exact. Pricing seems to higher here than in other locations.

Thanks

That is rediculously over priced. In fact it is only $5,000 less than my 2008 Misty Harbor with a 40 HP Suzuki 4-stroke was brand new. And that included a new Shorelander trailer.

You will regret buying a boat of that size with an engine that small.
