I have a friend of a friend selling an '87 Rinker Captiva, his description is as follows:

"The boat is a 1987 Rinker Captiva 206?which is a 20 ft. 6 in. long bow rider. It has a powerful 350 magnum V8 inboard engine attached to an Alpha One outdrive, or lower end. The engine itself is a rebuild that was installed about 5 years ago. Unfortunately, during on of our boating trips, the cooling pick up pump failed and the engine overheated. We shut it down and pulled it out of the water and had our mechanic look it over. The engine runs, but has a cyclical ?thump? in the lower end now?.crankshaft bearing?...or rod bearing?...hard to say unless it gets torn down for inspection. I replaced the coolant pick up pump and inspected the lower end. The lower end looks great and the pump was thoroughly tested.
I have no cover, so the boat has been exposed to the elements over the years, and as Diane mentioned, the vinyl is in poor shape. I have had verbal quotes for replacement of the vinyl at $600, and a new custom cover at the same?$600. So for $1200, you get a nice looking, protected boat. A new engine goes anywhere from 3 to 5 K?.so there are options there?or if you?re good w/ tools?a tear down and repair could cost less than $500."

Is the engine work a major concern, or is this something simple (I have some experience working with automotive engines, but none on marine)? Really, I could pick this up for about 1,000-2,000. He is just asking me to make him an offer. Any thoughts, or ideas of what the issue could be? Does this seem like a good value (from appearance it is in decent shape)? Whatever advice or thoughts on this you could offer would be much appreciated from this first-time boat purchaser.

If it's been exposed to the weather.. I'd be worried about more than just the motor. Who knows what the transom and stringers look like...

If it were me, I'd pass it up. For all the $ you are going to put into a new interior, engine, etc, you could pick a good used boat that doesn't have nearly as many problems. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to iboats! You came to the right place to ask your question.

Run away from that boat. If you don't, you will be a glutton for punishment.

Welcome to iBoats . . . Yup, stupid money. Maybe the guy could light the boat on fire.

Rotten vinyl, vinyl foam, floor, stringers, transom, and a blown engine = donation boat only!

That thing is only worth anything if it is parted out.

Run!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy Crap...Only $600 to have vinyl replaced!?!? This is about what one big bench seat costs to have recovered let alone a whole friggin boat. Someone saying that alone makes me think they are not being honest about it.

I think he's lying about how much it is to recover the interior, nevermind that the carpet is probably toast, the floor could be shot, a new top, new engine....... Who knows what else is pooched. I think you can find something that runs in better shape than that for around 5k.
