I'm looking for some advice for a good Fish & Ski boat.

I live in MN where there is an abundance of lakes. Both my wife and I grew up with fathers that liked to fish so we are familiar with the lund/crestliner 14' - 16' aluminum fishing boats. We have two kids 5 and 3 and would like to spend some time on the lakes this summer doing some fishing and playing. Eventully I'd like to do some tubing & skiing as well. I'm looking soley at used as I only want to spend around $8k. I have been looking at Glastrons on Craig's but am open to suggestions. I am particularly intersted in a recommended boat size for my family and any other pieces of advice such how old of boat to stay away from, motor size, style, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I'm confused, so what size boat are you looking for?

General info: for outboards any brand except Chrysler/Force (out of business, poor parts support) and I/O's stick with Mercruiser or Volvo but avoid any variation of the Mercruiser 470 (3.7 4 cly).

I like the aluminum fish and ski's myself and am currently rebuilding one in the newer style. Starcraft, Sylvan, Lowe, etc all make very nice ones. I just think they look more suited to the purpose. The glass fish & skis always seem to look to me like a ski boat with a trolling motor slapped on it :p

Re: Advice on Fish & Ski Boat

As far as size, I was thinking anywhere from 16-20 foot. I need to fit in my 24' deep garage as well.

I had been leaning more towards a fiberglass. My thinking was that I could find a littler newer and more family orientated boat for my money if buying fiberglass. What I meam by family orientated is better seating, storage, etc. but correct me if I'm wrong. I realize that aluminum is probably more durable & practicle for fishing but in reality I want to make sure the family is comfortable and having fun. Also keeping in mind my price point of $8k.

Thanks for the reply.

Around my area you could get yourself a pretty nice used boat for $8k. As far as comfort, seating and storage, I don't think the hull material makes much of a difference. You can get really nice boats with aluminum hulls also. What type of water will you be boating on? Unless you'll be boating on big open waters, I'd recommend a bowrider...I prefer outboards in your length range. An aluminum boat will be lighter than fiberglass, but can ride harsher and noisier. But you'll need less power. Also you say you have 2 kids but will you also be taking friends along? I'd say 17 foot is the minimum length I'd look at preferably 18-19 if your tow vehicle can handle it. Also you'll probably regret it if you underpower just to save money. But your needed hp will depend on length and hull material. I'd also stay away from tri-hulls if you plan on doing much watersports, especially on a lake that can get choppy from wind or other boat traffic. I'd also look for a wide beam..8 ft if possible.

I'd get the largest you can fit in your garage. My 18' JUST fits.
