Advice On Prop Pitch

I just bought a used 2005 Stingray 195 LS with the 4.3 GL Volvo Penta motor and SX outdrive. The boat came stock with a 23 pitch prop.

We are using the boat for pleasure, fishing, tubing and ski'ing. I bought and installed a 19 pitch prop yesterday. I have not had it out on the water yet.

I was reading that you should be concerned with WOT RPM'S, etc, so now I am concerned. Do I need to worry about this, or am I safe with the 19 pitch prop? Everyone I know says the 19 is best for tubing and ski'ing.

I think the WOT max rpms for this motor is 4600 rpms? Aghhh. What does everyone suggest or recommend?

Also, I am wanting to repaint the skeg (worn paint off about 1" on the edging). Do you know what paint I should buy? And do I just spray it the silver paint and leave it, or do you have to do a clear top coat?

Thanks everyone in advance.

Re: Advice On Prop Pitch

Your boat will turn a LOT more RPM with the 19" prop than it did with the 23". Without knowing what your WOT RPM was with the 23", nobody can tell you where you'll be with the 19". The 19" will have much better acceleration for skiing and tubing, but you'll probably need to watch your tach to ensure that you don't go over the max recommended RPM for your motor.

Using a car for example, the 23" was the equivalent of operating your car in high gear all the time. The 19" will be like it's in 2nd gear all the time. It will accelerate better, but you'll have to pay more attention to over-revving.

Do you think it would be better to go with a 21 or 22 pitch? I don't know if the Volvo Penta 4.3GL (CARB) has a rev limiter, or could I install one?

Don't want to take a chance in going over RPM. I think the max rpm of this motor is 4800.

The boat is a singray and it came stock with a 23 pitch. Seems sorta high, maybe best to go a little down?

Re: Advice On Prop Pitch

see what the 19 will do....if it goes to 5200 for a short period of time to see what it will turn it's not going to blow your engine...
As stated above, it would be BEST to know what the max rpm of the 23 was first.
