I need a small boat that I can equip with a 50-75 HP outboard for waterskiing. I am loking at the Silverline 1600Ls and the Sylvan Sport V160. The Sylvan looks to be less expensive but the Silverline shows 950 lbs dry weight while the Sylvan is 1420 lbs. Anyone with experience with either boat and any recomendations.

Thanks

I don't think you would be satified with the performance of either boat, with only a 50-75hp.
These are both too heavy for a motor of that size, if you intend to ski behind it.

Concider that you will be adding motor, battery, fuel, rigging, gear, 2-3 people, thats a minimum of 600 pounds (probably more) in addition to the boat.

You're gonna need a bigger motor, or a much lighter boat.

Something like this is more like it, 725 pounds.
http://www.princecraft.com/apps/pro...p?lang=E&ID=11801&familyID=11341&RootID=11055

Hey Roscoe!
Is there some kind of calculation for weight/horsepower for water skiing?

I have a 15' Trophy w/ Force 50.. was wondering if there's enough oomph to pull the kidz out of the water?

Re: Advice on Silverline and Sylvan Boats

I wasn't using any formula, just previous experience.

I have heard some formulas, like 1 hp for every 20 pounds of boat and load. So figure a 750# hull, plus 200# motor, 2 adults 300-400#, plus gas and battery 125#, plus gear 100-200#. That would be 1475#+, which would be about a 75hp motor, and still have the power needed to pull up an average skier.

A 700# boat with a 35hp motor will also fit the formula, and will work.

Used to ski behind my uncles 14' wooden runabout with a 33? hp motor when I was a little kid.

Other factors do come into play, like weight of skier, type of hull, condition of motor, size and condition of prop, etc.

I have seen kids ski behind a 14' aluminum utility boat with a 25 hp.

So I think you have a chance of getting the kids up. If it don't work, try a kneeboard, or saucer as we called the homemade plywood ones we had 40 years ago.

Here is a calculator that predicts what maximum performance might be. I feel it is quite optimistic but it will give you an idea. You need to be careful with weight figures. Be sure to include boat, full fuel, engine, people, gear, batteries, etc. as boat weights are specified bare and dry. Without a doubt, the Sylvan will be well over 2000#, probably close to 2300.
http://www.go-fast.com/boat_speed_predictions.htm
