Hi again guys. So I have my head and exhaust manifold off my 1977 70 HP Johnson. The powerhead had previously suffered an overheat and it melted the pressure relief valves. I found pieces of them throughout the water jackets.
The thermostat works as it should. I put it in a pot of water on the stove and reading the water temp with my cooking thermometer it started to open right around 143. I cleaned it up some and I plan on reusing it temporarily.
Anyway, I am heading up north on vacation early next week and I planned on taking the boat with me. I cannot get new pressure relief valves in time for the trip. Will it be ok if I temporarily run it without the pressure relief valves in?
From what I have read, this will lead to the motor running cooler which shouldn't cause any damage correct? Also, will this have essentially the same effect as removing the thermostat?
I do plan to order the parts, as well as a new thermostat, I just don't want to do any damage to my engine. It's an easy swap once they come in.
Thanks in advance.
