Good morning folks. Please provide your opinion on the direction i am going. Quick rundown on what i did. I have a 1983 470 that had a ticking/noisy valve. Purchased the lifter collapsing tool (I replaced the lifter)and thought i was collapsing the lifters in the sequence called out in the manual when in reality i was bending all my pushrods. These different length pushrods are difficult to find and expensive. I read that ford 429/460's are usable if you get the correct lengths. I went to a machine shop and he located what i thought were stock length. 8.648 melling part# mpr-308. Now i know you have to adjust the valves with a feeler gauge but you need a starting point and the old ones were all bent, so no measuring there. I did hammer one out and got 8.592. I installed the 8.648's and (did not start it yet) the feeler gauge is a little tight. I found some lunati's part number 80767-s for a 429/460 that are 8.616 that i would like to try to get closer to a .150 clearance.
My question is do you think this it is ok to use the lunati part number 80767-1 on a mercruiser 470/3.7 if the lash specs out?
They are 5/16 which is the stock .312 dia. Ball type ends and 8.616.
Thank you for your help. I am trying to do this right but the red dye pushrods are expensive and hard to find.
