Does anyone know about the 4HP Evinrude? from what I am told it is pull start, water cooled, 2 cylinder, are these good second-hand engines, or best avoided, this one (which I have not seen yet) was purchased by owner 1990s? any comments would be appreciated, I want this one as back-up for my Evinrude 40hp.

That is one of the best little engines ever, Lurcher. It is a development from the JohnnyRude 3s of the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. They were great to start with and just got better.

I wouldn't hesitate to acquire it, even if it needs some TLC.

If taken care of properly these little motors will run almost forever. They're terrific trollers and can even manage to get a small aluminum boat up on plane with a light load. If it's a 4HP Deluxe, it's even better. :)

I had one until it went into the drink! :( Great motor. Best in its class. Two cylinders made it a great smooth running engine for its small size.

Best in class-EVER.

That engine has not been beat, by anybody.

As JB said, it is a derivitive of the legendary "3"'s of yesteryear. The twin cylinder outlay of the engine makes it the smoothest, quietest and an all around winner.

If maintained, it will last forever.

Thanks Gentlemen for information, I have seen engine and purchased same it starts first pull has some small paint marks but really in great condition, will be good as standby untill I get to grips with my Evinrude 40hp, I notice the cooling water exits the exhaust which appears to be a mixture of spray and heavy water, the indentification plate says made in Belguim, I will post date ect for further help, JBD

Hi Lurcher, what sort of boat will you be using this on? I live in Kent and have a 14' w/ 70 HP Rude and I´m looking for a backup engine as well.
Had my eyes on a folding 3 HP Rude that I was going to store in the bow, but it was this forum´s conclusion that it was too small for that purpose, and I should go for 6-8 HP which weighs a lot more. Still thinking that 4 HP would do me ok, as my boat is small and quite light - except for the engine which some people seem to think is a bit on the large size for the boat, but I like to have some reserves. Did you get your engine locally or on ebay perhaps?
Thanks. Siggi

Re: Advise on 4HP Evinrude.

Hello SiggiJo, My boat is also 14ft and a bit but like yours light, I have a Evinrude 40hp on, never had it in water but seen it demonstrated and seems more than enough power, I just didn't like the idea of out in open sea with no back-up! untill I get some confidence on big engine, I'd say the 4Hp will push my boat along enough to get back in? better to have it up front instead of phoning Lifeboat??the Gentleman whom I bought it from still has lovely 4hp Mercury, and really nice Yamaha 8HP, he bought the 3 of them at same time (deceased chap) all one owner like new they have to be see to believed, if you'd like his number he will post, but I got advert from Boatsandoutboards.com, let me know and I'll give you details of him? Re: Advise on 4HP Evinrude.

Lurcher, I think 40 HP is plenty for a 14-footer, it´s just that I got a good deal on this engine and it´s only about 40-50 lbs heavier than the 40/50 twins. Thanks for offer on the contact, but I really have my mind set on the 4 HP Rude now - the Yam is going to be a bit big and I´d like to be able to use the same fuel connector, so the Merc is not really in the picture. I have the rest of the winter to find something decent.

I too have not had my boat in the water yet - bought it last spring as a project boat, worked on it all summer, trying to finish it in time, but that was not to be, so now I have the rest of the winter to complete it properly. I too live on the coast and it would not be good to drift into the English Channel un-announced, so that´s why I´m looking for a back up motor as well. Good luck..

Re: Advise on 4HP Evinrude.

Many thanks for reply, all understood, my boat needs work as well (not much)tidy up and items replaced that were missing, mild steel bolts replaced with stainless etc; my trailer is somthing else, how people can live with somthing seized solid for cost of £40 to refurbish all rollers is beyond me!again like yourself somthing to do and look forward to some boating,I found this site about 2 days before I bought boat and I would have spent a fair bit of cash if it weren't for these guys help and advise, they know it and have done it and are only to willing to share their experiance! My boat is Dateline with Evinrude 40hp, keep in touch, check out www.boatlaunch.uk great site.
