Hi,
We were looking to purchase a 2001 Sea Ray 180 with 100 hrs on it. The boat was used as an hourly rental in fresh water. I suppose the engine has been put through hell and has donated its share of props to the local reefs. Should we avoid purchasing a rental. Asking price is 12k. What do you think. Thanks.
Scott

I'm not sure of the price, possibly 16k. IT's really a question about how many engine hours can you typically get out of these engines (Mercury I/O 125hp)?

Hi spehnke -- Keeping in mind that it's really easy to drop $1200 a pop into repairing an I/O, should you go for it make sure you get the engine/outdrive checked by a marine mechanic first.

On the other hand a new Stingray 18 footer, 135 HP Mercruiser or Volvo, and trailer sells for much less than $12K. Look for leftovers, too. Searays are nice, but look around first.

Good luck, Mike

I don't think a I would ever buy a rental boat, they would worst than a rental car since 1/2 the people abuse them without even trying, the other try to abuse them. Just my 2 cents.
