I am going to buy a boat and my options are V150TLR (carbs) or 175 HPDI. Which of these would be the better as far as maintenance wise and cost of such maintenance long term. I don't care about the fuel savings. Is one more reliable than the other if maintained accordingly or what? Does ethanol have a greater effect on one or the other? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You'll get lots of opinions on this. I've always owned 2 strokes with carbs and find them easy and simple to understand and maintain. The trick is to always have fresh, clean, stabilized fuel, drain carbs a couple of times per year, buy a manual and study/learn the motor. I've been very lucky so far with my motors, having owned Yamaha 4HP,40HP,115HP and my present 90HP with never a problem from any of them! Guess I better knock on wood!
Good Luck!

Yes, you can still get them through the end of this year. I heard that Yamaha will not offer carbed motors starting in 2010. I appreciate everyones response and will get the carbed motor based on the replies. I heard the HPDI motor had issues in 2000 and 2001 but thought they were worked out.
I was looking at a 2006 Ranger with a 175 HPDI and it had less than 30 hrs on the motor. Thanks for the advise everyone. I love this forum!

What differance is there between the two when it comes to yearly maintenace? I live in central Florida, so the boat will not sit for very long. I try to fish once a week, but sometimes during the hollidays I may miss a whole month before I take the boat out. Cost wise, is the HPDI a lot more for the yearly maintenace? What is involved with a yearly maintenace for a HPDI motor?

Parts for a HPDI are very expensive.
plus finding a tech who knows how to work on them can be challenging.

The carbed engine parts are much cheaper, very reliable and easy to work on.

i would if i have money for a new motor buy a fuel injected 4 stroke.
like a DF140
